Blue Cross Blue Shield: A Failed Pitch

In 2013 we were getting tired of all of our efforts failing. Just then I got a networking lead that we could pitch our idea to Blue Cross and Blue Shield at the Pure Michigan Summit in Detroit! I was so excited to share it with the group at our weekly staff meetings at my home, when Kelly walked in and said we should shut the business down.

We had been working for free for over 3 years now and you could see…Kelly had a point.  But this is what we were waiting for!  These marketing opportunities are like a shot of caffeine in the 11th hour of work.

We revised our business plan… again and headed to Detroit.  There were all types of vendors there to pitch their ideas and we were so happy to be a part of it. Finally, after a long day of waiting, it was our time for 15 minutes of fame.

We met with the representative for the Wellness program and she thought it might be a good fit for the Blue Care Network program, which had 500,000 members!  Which, I’d like to mention, at $20 a month could have meant $120 Million a year!

I really can’t explain the rush of vulnerability that comes with an opportunity like that.  All of this time and energy spent building something from the ground up, along with several other people who believe in it so much they either work for free or give money to it…and then handing it over to someone else and saying, “This is our creation…I hope you like it.. but if you don’t, we are going to lose everything”.

 “Call me”.

Of course, I followed up with the person that we met with and she said she passed on our information to the Wellness buyers … but we never heard anything.  I still think our plan is perfect as a rider to a typical insurance plan.  If only an insurance company would take the time to read BridgeIT!

The answer to the health care crisis is in your hands. Even before 2020, our country had a healthcare problem. Our healthcare system has a values problem. And we have a self-nurturing problem. It’s time for all of that to change.
